Mud Brick & Cob – Natural Earth Buildings and Stabilisers

Mud Brick, Cob & Earth Building Standards

Strawbale Building Guidelines for Wet and Humid Climates

Graeme North has been involved in earthen, strawbale, and eco-architecture over the past 30 years with around 100 earthen architecture projects to his credit. Apart from a period of a few years when he was a principal of Warkworth Architects, he has practised by himself.

Examples of his work are to be found from Otago to Northland, and he has both a national and international reputation.

He was Chair of the Earth Building Association of New Zealand for many years, and is Chair of the Standards New Zealand Technical Committee for the NZ Earth Building Standards which were published in 1998.

More recently the practice has been engaged to undertake several eco-village designs, in rural, sensitive areas with high conservation and landscape values, semi-rural and urban settings. Some initial work is being done internationally as well as within New Zealand.

He is well versed in eco-friendly and alternative forms of building as well as more conventional work, and has researched his subject and given workshops or papers at many conferences in several different countries.

He is also particularly interested in the integrated relationship between plants and buildings, a concept that incorporates permaculture principles that he calls “livingscapes”.

His particular areas of expertise include all earth building types (adobe, cob, in-situ adobe, rammed earth, pressed earth brick, poured earth, light earth), strawbale building, non-toxic timber building, and a range of other alternative approaches and materials.

He has received various awards and commendations during his career including the 1990 NZ Commemoration Medal for Services to NZ and the NZIA Research Award for Earth Building Standards
